Module Five – What Role Models or Recent Students Can I Follow?

Description

Evoke Career and Callings module for use in introductory computer science or other science courses. Designed for use mid to late in the semester, after students have some experience with at least one other module. Module is intended for approximately 100 minutes of class time, but may be adjusted.

Purpose

Introduce students to the real past students who have “made it” through the computer science program at Loyola. These students are all successful but in different ways, with different careers, and sometimes different routes to get there.

Allow today’s students to see what happens in the first few years after leaving the university. See some interesting stories about “journeys” including one that did not end up in a direct computer science role.

Outline

Five profiles of past students are provided. The profiles provide an overview of the past student’s time in school and what they are doing now both in their careers and in the rest of their lives.

In most cases, the past students have offered to either join the class sessions in person or via phone or computer conference.

Each profile can be used in class as follows:

1. (15 minutes) Review of past student profile
2. (10 minutes) Discussion with past student (if available)

Two or three profiles will be covered in a typical 50 minute class.
